The Fimmvörðuháls trail and the Þórsmörk valley take you through some of the most unusual, surreal places in Iceland. Picture hiking between two glaciers, over fresh lava fields and past old eruption sites, with waterfall after waterfall along the way.
Then you reach Þórsmörk, which honestly feels like stepping into another world: sharp basalt peaks covered in bright green moss, winding blue rivers and quiet valleys. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop and just breathe it in.
Expect amazing views, stories from Icelandic nature and folklore, and that special feeling you only get in the wild. If you’re up for a memorable adventure, let’s explore one of Iceland’s best trails together!
We hike 4–7 hours a day over all kinds of terrain: trails, rocky sections and a few river crossings. Bring sturdy hiking boots and something for the rivers – soft sneakers or sandals work well.
Day 1 has the biggest climb, about 1,000 m. We pass moss-covered gorges, endless waterfalls and truly wild scenery, and finish at a mountain hut with views of two glaciers and, on a clear day, the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 2 crosses a high pass that usually holds snow all year. We then descend into Þórsmörk for our first views of the valley – so colourful and dramatic it looks unreal, but trust me, it’s real. The weather will make sure you feel alive. In the valley we cross a river and walk on to our hut for a well-earned dinner.
Day 3 starts early and we take our time exploring the valley. After lunch we catch the 4 pm bus back to Reykjavík, heading home with tired legs, full hearts and plenty of stories.
