Kerlingarfjöll is a mountain range in the Kjölur area of the Icelandic Highlands, part of a volcanic system surrounded by glaciers and geothermal activity. It’s a favourite with hikers and nature lovers, with trails for every level through mountains and steaming geothermal areas full of hot springs, fumaroles and bubbling mud pots. Despite the harsh conditions, mosses, lichens and other hardy plants thrive among the rocks, and you may see birds and small mammals adapted to life in the Highlands.
