Fimmvörðuháls lies in South Iceland between two glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. It’s superb hiking country, with some of Iceland’s best scenery – and you walk right where the famous 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption began.
The trail links Skógar on the south coast with Þórsmörk in the southern highlands, through spectacular mountain, glacier and volcanic landscapes. Over 25 km it climbs about 1,000 m, starting above the mighty Skógafoss waterfall and passing many more on the stretch known as the Waterfall Way, before crossing the high pass at Fimmvörðuháls. The views are stunning all the way, and your guide doubles as your photographer to capture the day.
You’ll need sturdy, high hiking boots and wind- and waterproof layers. There are no restaurants along the way, so bring sandwiches, snacks and plenty of water, plus an extra layer – Icelandic weather can change in an instant.
The hike is truly spectacular: about 25 km and about 1,000 m of climbing over uneven ground, with endless viewpoints. Snow and ice can appear at any time of year, adding to the adventure. It’s a challenging route that usually takes 10–12 hours, but every step rewards you with unforgettable scenery.
